Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be deadly when inhaled in large amounts. It is produced by burning fuel in appliances like furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, gas stoves, and vehicles. Here are some key steps to keep your home safe from carbon monoxide poisoning:

1. Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors

  • Place CO detectors on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.

  • Install them at least 5 feet from the ground for accurate readings.

  • Test detectors monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.

  • Replace the detectors every 5–7 years, or as recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Properly Maintain Fuel-Burning Appliances

  • Have your heating system, water heater, and other gas, oil, or coal-burning appliances serviced annually by a professional.

  • Ensure chimneys and vents are clear of debris to allow proper ventilation.

  • Never block vents or flues with furniture or other objects.

3. Use Appliances Safely

  • Never use gas stoves or ovens for heating your home.

  • Do not use charcoal grills or portable gas heaters indoors.

  • Always use generators outdoors, at least 20 feet away from doors, windows, and vents.

4. Be Cautious with Vehicles

  • Never leave a car running in an enclosed space like a garage, even with the door open.

  • Ensure the exhaust pipe is not blocked by snow or debris before starting the vehicle.

5. Know the Symptoms of CO Poisoning

  • Early symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and weakness.

  • Prolonged exposure can lead to loss of consciousness or death.

  • If you suspect CO poisoning, leave the area immediately and call emergency services.

By following these steps, you can reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and keep your household safe. Would you like recommendations for specific CO detectors or professional inspection services?
