Carbon Monoxide Safety: How to Protect Your Home and Family

Why carbon monoxide deserves your attention
Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless and tasteless, yet it sends more than 100 000 people to U.S. emergency rooms each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Because CO displaces oxygen in the bloodstream it can harm you before you notice anything is wrong.
Our team routinely finds outdated alarms, blocked flues and poorly vented appliances during inspections. A few simple steps can stop these problems from turning into tragedies.
What produces CO inside (and outside) a home
Furnaces and boilers
Water heaters
Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves
Gas ovens, stoves and dryers
Portable fuel-burning heaters or generators
Vehicles idling in an attached garage
Why it is dangerous
CO binds to hemoglobin more readily than oxygen. Early symptoms—headache, nausea, dizziness and confusion—can mimic the flu. At higher levels or longer exposures CO causes loss of consciousness and, in extreme cases, death .

Alarms sound above health-protective levels because they are designed to reduce nuisance alerts. Symptoms, however, can appear at lower concentrations.
Illinois requirements and placement basics
Illinois law requires a CO alarm within 15 feet of every sleeping area.
Place alarms on each level of the house and, when possible, 5 feet above the floor for optimal readings.
Follow manufacturer instructions for mounting height and replacement (usually every 5–7 years).

Five practical steps to cut CO risk
1. Install and maintain CO alarms
Put alarms on every level and near all bedrooms
Test alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly
Replace any unit that has reached its end-of-life date
Do not ignore chirping or “end” messages
2. Service fuel-burning appliances annually
A licensed HVAC technician should clean burners, confirm proper draft and check heat exchangers. A blocked flue or cracked exchanger can leak CO without warning.
3. Use combustion appliances safely
Never use a gas range or oven for space heating
Keep charcoal grills and portable heaters outdoors
Run generators at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents
4. Be cautious with vehicles and garages
Do not idle cars in an attached or enclosed garage—even with the door open
Clear snow or debris from tailpipes before starting a vehicle
5. Know the symptoms and act fast
If anyone experiences headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness or confusion, evacuate immediately and call emergency services. Do not re-enter until first responders give the all-clear.
